Professor Kirk BINGAMAN

Dr. Kirk Bingaman is professor of mental health counseling and spiritual integration at Fordham University in New York City. A licensed mental health counselor in New York, he is editor-in-chief of Pastoral Psychology, one of the most well-established academic journals in the field of psychology and religion/spirituality. While on sabbatical in 2018 and 2022, Dr. Bingaman was a scholar in residence at both the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences in Milan, Italy, and the Department of Philosophy, Sociology, Education, and Applied Psychology at the University of Padua, Italy. More recently in 2024, Dr. Bingaman was a keynote presenter at the Psychotherapy and Faith Conference in Houston, Texas (“Psychotherapy and Faith as Safe Harbors in Turbulent Times”), and at the American Academy of Religion Meeting in San Diego, California (“Reflections on Emergent AI Technologies and the Practices of Care and Counseling”).
Dr. Bingaman is the author of four books: Freud and Faith: Living in the Tension; Treating the New Anxiety: A Cognitive-Theological Approach; The Power of Neuroplasticity for Pastoral and Spiritual Care; and Pastoral and Spiritual Care in a Digital Age: The Future Is Now. More recent publications include the book chapter, "Religion in the Digital Age: An Irreversible Process," in Digital and Spatial Studies of Religions; and several articles, including "The End of the World As We Have Known It?", which focuses on the psychological and spiritual significance of climate change; and "The Relationship Between Social Media Use and Well-Being, Potentially Moderated By Mindful and Religious Coping," a collaborative study conducted in the Philippines with psychology faculty of Ateneo de Manila University.
